As an important place for our survival, the construction of cities determines and affects our future. It is reported that two-thirds of the world’s population will live in cities by 2030, and it is expected that the world population will exceed 10 billion by 2050. The population over 65 years of age has increased from 9% to 16%, and the global aging problem is serious.

It is no exaggeration to say that overpopulation, the distribution of urban population, the ecological environment, climate change, transportation, medical facilities and public supporting services are the most pressing problems at present. People are eager to avoid and solve most urban diseases through reasonable urban planning, and the exploration of “future city” is also widely reported or speculated.



In people’s imagination, the “Future City” is equated with the high-tech cities in science fiction films. However, according to the first report of the United Nations Located in China Future Cities Advisory Committee- “Future City Advisor Outlook 2020: China’s Urban Technology”, it shows that the future city must be inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, wise and people-oriented.

The establishment of Xiongan New Area is an innovative exploration of the future based on the torrent of the times. At the 3rd HIDW, design masters from the fields of industrial design, science and technology, culture, and architecture have launched an innovative discussion on future urban planning, living, travel, sustainability, urban wisdom, new materials and other fields focusing on the “Design’s Construct of Pluriversality”.

Today, the author has sorted out the wonderful sharing of several guests to bring you new thoughts on the design of “future city”.

Climate Issues

The development of a city may spend decades or more. In addition to considering how to solve the current issues, urban design must also have a foresight of the future, and use a foresighted approach to depict the blueprint of future urban life.

In the context of global warming, people have to face up to the impact of rising temperature on resident living and the damage to the ecological environment. According to report of the United Nations, global temperature has risen by 1.2 degrees by 2018. Once the global average temperature exceeds 1.5 degrees, the extreme high temperature in the mid-latitude regions of the world will increase by 3 degrees compared to the current high temperature. The north pole may be ice-free in summer in this century, 90% of the existing coral reefs will also disappear, and the global sea level will rise. As a result, nearly tens of millions of people will be affected, and the frequency of global extreme climate will also increase.

Liu Tianlun, managing director of WSP in Chinese Zone, mentioned in the keynote speech of “Foreseeing the City of Future” that future urban design must solve the issues of urban waterlogging and sea level rise, which can be solved with the development concept of sponge city.




Sponge city is a new generation of urban rainfall flood management concept. When it rains, it absorbs water, stores water, seeps water, and purifies water. When needed, the stored water will be “released” and used. It can also be called a “hydroelasticity city”. The substantive application of the “sponge city” material shows excellent water seepage, pressure resistance, wear resistance, anti-skid, environmental protection, beautiful and colorful, comfortable, easy to maintain, sound absorption and noise reduction. It has become a “breathing” road surface of urban landscape, which also effectively alleviates the urban heat island effect so that the urban road surface no longer heats up.


Sustainable Development

The biggest mission of planning and construction of the Future City is to reshape a low-carbon and low-energy city at present when the earths resources are becoming more and more scarce. This is inseparable from the development and utilization of new materials and clean energy. Liu Tianlun mentioned new materials and new energy such as gypsum powder, solar energy, wind energy, etc. in his speech. He expressed that “We are encouraging common ecology and common society, and maintaining the ecological chain so that there is room for sustainable development for both the earth and human beings.”



Green sustainable development is based on the ecological environment and resource carrying capacity, and environmental protection is an important link in achieving sustainable development. Zero carbon emission is one of the ideas of many future cities. By setting up an high efficient and self-sufficient energy system, effectively treating urban sewage and waste, reducing the impact and destruction of the city on nature in a longer time span, the long-term and sustainable urban life will be achieved. Renewable energy, recycling and reuse are effective ways to reduce energy consumption and achieve zero emission.

Michael Young, chief curator of the 3rd HIDW and master of British industrial design, stated in the keynote speech of Design’s Construct of Pluriversality” that Design is a process of discovering problems, but also a process of solving problems. We will create sustainability and make all the substances in our lives more valuable.” In his speech, Michael Young shared that he transformed the decommissioned Boeing 747 into different products through disassembly and reassembly, so as to interpret “sustainability” through such behavior.

New Smart City

Today, with the high development of Internet and intelligent technology, information products have been ubiquitously integrated into people’s daily lives. Smartphones, electronic payments, sharing economy, smart travel...not only greatly improve the efficiency of urban life, but also turn everything that happens in the city into big data and incorporate it into a huge urban algorithm.

But is such a high-tech city a real smart city?

Hereto, Liu Tianlun expressed thatTechnology is a very important factor in the construction of future city, but not all.” A truly smart city not only makes the government’s decision-making smarter, more accurate, and more scientific, but also enables urban users to have more efficient and convenient perception of the city and live a happier life.

After years of exploration, the society has reached a consensus on a new smart city: For the goal of improving the level of refined and intelligent management of the city, the sense of gain and happiness of the citizens, and the intelligent reshaping of enterprises, an integrated intelligent system with three-dimensional perception, global collaboration, and accurate judgement and continuous evolution will be built.

Zheng Dedong, director of Institute of Tourism and Landscape Architecture Southeast University, expressed his views on the new smart city at the round-table conference of Xiongan Design Forum that “The ‘new’ of a new smart city means that the city can purify itself with the help of its citizens and builders. This self-purification gives cities not only beautiful skins, but intelligent brains, soft hearts, and interesting souls. We should encourage designers to really read the city, to experience the city, to explore the greatest value and beauty of the city, and to avoid same imagines of the city and islanding effect.”

Subsequently, he further interpreted the intelligent brain and the soft heart, “An Intelligent brain-such as introducing AI into property management; intelligent cruiser make our city safer; deep-level data exchange and data sharing enable us more convenient; deep-level interaction makes us more efficient and so on. A soft heart-the most attractive part of a city lies in its absorbing ability and emotional design. It gives the city temperature and allows people to feel the warmth of the city. A city is a creation of physical space. People are social animals. When interacting with the space, people not only use it, but also feel its fun and culture during our contact, which makes our urban space more interesting.”

Under Zheng Dedong’s interpretation, the blueprint of a smart city gradually becomes clear in our minds, and Xiongan New Area, the city of the future, has been developing towards a smart city for a long time.

Rows of multifunctional street lights with pattern of reed flowers in Xiongan New Area are standing guard for the construction of a smart city. The street light integrates smart lighting, mobile phone charging, information release, one-button alarm, rest seats, video surveillance, WIFI coverage, traffic lights, 5G base stations and the environmental monitoring, etc. And the illumination intensity can be automatically adjusted according to the environmental brightness and weather conditions, effectively reducing energy consumption and operation and maintenance costs. At the same time, it is equipped with multi-functional cameras and traffic lights to automatically carry out traffic data collection and assist in traffic dispatching and commanding and executive law enforcement. And it is equipped with a one-button alarm device to quickly carry out identification, personnel positioning and police force dispatching to help seekers. In the overall design of the street light, the designer innovated the seat and seat base in detail according to the image of the lotus leaf of Baiyangdian in Xiongan New Area, and skillfully used the lotus leaf pattern as the guiding gutter so that it does not leave water stains after the rain, which makes urbanites who walk in the reinforced concrete urban forest every day can also feel the joy of abandoning themselves to nature.


Urban Travel

What is the future of urban transportation?

From the perspective of the development trend of urban transportation, the future urban travel will develop around three major trends: green, sharing and intelligent”.

In the background of global warming, green has been frequently mentioned in recent years, and peoples perceptions are also changing. A social formation dominated by fuel vehicles is moving towards non-fossil fuel; public transportation is the best choice especially for big cities; from the perspective of environmental protection, walking is the only way to move without any means of transportation, and the only way to travel with zero emission. People can exercise by walking to better feel the urban space in their lives. Liu Tianlun mentioned in his keynote speech that “Future traffic design is not to solve the problem of vehicle travel, but to encourage walking and cycling. In order to encourage people to walk, urban space needs to be more experiential and humanized.”


In short, the zero-emission, or low-emission modes that focus on walking and cycling will become more prominent in the future.

And under the trend of “sharing” and “intelligence”, the future travel mode will shift to the direction of high-information and high-efficiency organization. When the vehicles on the road in the future are unmanned, will the vehicles still wait in the parking space?

At the 2nd HIDW, Itonglian Technology demonstrated the latest rail traffic solution—the lightweight MRT system integrates three-dimensional transportation, 5G intelligent technology, and loV system to achieve end-to-end automatic drive and automatic control. The transportation system can replace the traditional bus to solve the “last mile” problem to alleviate urban traffic congestion. The track can be designed on the ground, underground or around the building without occupying the existing road.

The planning and construction of the future city bears the imagination and expectations of countless people for the living environment in the future. The planning and construction of the Xiongan New Area is a great design for the century. As the earths environment becomes worse and worse, human beings are becoming more and more determined to take the path of sustainable development. HIDW, which has been successfully held for three sessions, gathers design boutiques in various fields such as green, ecology, and environmental protection each year, and is strongly combined with the Goldreed Industrial Design Award to give full play to the innovative achievements in urban architecture, ecological livability, green intelligence, innovative development, new materials, etc., empowering and promoting the construction of this future city.

The Xiongan New Area has also enabled many top design wisdom to be put into practice. New speculations and new ideas are being formed in the Xiongan New Area.
