Established in 2010, the Institute of Industrial Design, Shandong University is a university‑level research institute integrating teaching, research and social services. It is among Shandong’s first‑batch industrial‑design centers. Bringing together disciplines of design, mechanical engineering, materials science and fine arts, the institute gives full play to the university’s disciplinary strengths and achieves interdisciplinary integration.

Its core team consists of well‑known scholars in industrial design. Over the past three years, the institute has published more than 30 SCI‑indexed papers and filed over 50 patents. Boasting a well‑balanced team structure, it has built partnerships with domestic institutions including Beihang University, China National Institute of Standardization and the National Rehabilitation Center. Joint research programmes are also carried out with overseas universities such as Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, Nanyang Technological University and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
