The historical origin of the University of Science and Technology of Beijing can be traced back to the first discipline of mining and metallurgy in modern Chinese history, founded by Beiyang Western School in 1895. In 1952, the school was formed by the mining and metallurgy departments of 6 famous universities, including Tianjin University (formerly Beiyang University) and Tsinghua University. It was named Beijing Iron and Steel

Institute and has been regarded as the first institution of higher learning in the iron and steel industry established in New China. In 1960, it changed its name to Beijing Iron and Steel Institute and was approved as a national key university. In 1984, it became one of the first colleges and universities to formally establish a graduate school in the country. In 1988, it changed its name to the Beijing University of Science and Technology.

In May 1997, the school first entered the national “211 Project” ranks. In 2006, the school became the first batch of universities to build “985 Project” Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform. In 2014, the “Iron and Steel Common Technology Collaborative Innovation Center” led by the school and Northeast University as the core universities, was successfully selected for the National “2011 Plan”. In 2017, the school was selected into the national as a “double first-class” university. In 2018, the school was approved as the “co-build colleges and universities” of the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the Ministry of Education. At present, the school has developed into a national key university directly under the

Ministry of Education, with the coordinated development of engineering, science, management, liberal arts, economics, law and other disciplines.
